Education is once again under attack by the Bible-beating Republican Party, as a Republican candidate for Congress Bob Frey announces that he wants schools to teach that humans lived alongside dinosaurs.
Frey, who is a friend and ally of Michele Bachman, stated in a 2004 appearance before the Minnesota State Senate Education Committee that the fossil record proves that “dinosaurs have always lived with man,” and that this should be taught in public schools as “real science.”
Dinosaurs lived some 65 million years ago, and modern humans did not come into the picture until about 200,000 years ago. However, creationists like Frey reject all scientific evidence and turn instead to the Bible in which they believe states the earth itself is less than 10,000 years old.
Frey is no stranger to bogus scientific claims. He used to run a creationist organization that claimed if creationism was taught in schools, violence incited by the theory of evolution would decrease around the US. Frey also has some very strange ideas about HIV/AIDS, claiming that the immune deficiency is caused when sperm is deposited into an anus.
This is yet another example of the Right’s insistence on teaching theological mythology in the classroom, ignoring even the most basic of scientific principles that are understood worldwide.
