All eyes are on you, Big Brother.
The Daily Dot reports that police in West Virginia were caught on video violently arresting a terminally ill man that they believed to be drunkenly abusing his children. The video shows officers pinning the 39-year-old man, Jeffery Bane, to the ground. Police believed Bane to be “under the influence of narcotics” when they approached him during the September 6th arrest.
The police complaint stated that “the children appeared to be overheated” and that “When asked about provisions that he had with him for the children, Bane struck the stroller violently with his hand, pushing it forward abruptly while his infant son was still seated inside.”
Bane was charged with battery on an officer, disorderly conduct, and obstruction of justice.
However, Bane wasn’t under the effects of any narcotics; according to his nephew, Josh Bane, he suffers from Huntington’s Disease. The disease, which is hereditary, triggers the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain. There’s no cure currently, and Josh described the disease as being “very similar to Parkinson’s.”
The Huntington’s Disease Society of America describes the progression of the disease as impacting short-term memory, concentration, and causing involuntary movements of the body. They note that “Walking, speaking, and swallowing abilities deteriorate. Eventually the person is unable to care for him or herself. Death follows from complications such s choking, infection, or heart failure.”
Josh Bane’s statement also read that:
“Assuming because of his appearance he was high on narcotics with out reason they began to sub due him, macing and beating him in the head as he fell to his face were he was then held with a great amount of force by two officers double his size as a third one landed on his torso. For the the next ten minutes as my cousins watch unattended, my uncle pleads and cries out in pain for the lack of breath and agony being applied to him.”
The video of the incident was recorded by a woman who identified herself as Sara Bostonia. It begins with Jeffery Bane lying on the ground and screaming as the officers hold him down. Less than a minute into the clip, Bostonia yells “stop it!”
When one of the officers asked how she’s involved with him, she replied that she was “driving by” and then asked the officer to “go away.”
Bostonia then accused the officer of refusing to handcuff Bane, even though he was bleeding and gurgling. When the police threaten to arrest her for obstructing justice, she tells them to “just leave me alone” and later calls an ambulance. The ambulance doesn’t appear during the nearly 10 minute long recording.
Bane’s family has started an online campaign calling on police to drop charges against him. It features an image of him bleeding while being held down.
