Black Friday is a time to take advantage of some outstanding savings, while beating, stealing, or shooting your fellow man in the midst of getting that new TV. In Romeoville, Illinois today, two men have been charged in connection with the Black Friday incident at Kohl’s. Romeoville police say an officer shot a suspect in a Kohl’s parking lot that was full of Black Friday shoppers.
Gerald Chamberlain is now facing charges of theft and Robert Russell has been charged with attempted murder, retail theft and obstructing an officer. Another person was arrested, but is currently in the hospital.
When authorities arrived at Kohl’s after a call to report shoplifters, they witnessed a man running out of the front doors of the store. The officers rushed after the man, but he jumped into a Pontiac Sunfire. One of the officers attempted to follow the man into the car, but the man slammed the door on the officer’s arm and then continued to drag the officer through the parking lot while he was hanging halfway outside of the car and demanding the driver to stop. The backup officer fired four shots at the car, striking the driver in the shoulder, resulting in the stop of the car. “We, then, were able to arrest the driver and the passenger and arrested the third subject who was still inside the store,” said Romeoville Police Chief Mark Turvey. Witness Phil Koster told ABC that this was “definitely not something [I] expected tonight. [I was] just doing some light shopping, trying to get in the Black Friday spirit, buy a few things. A little shaken up. Not bad or anything. [I] was within 5 feet of everything happening. It was very surreal.”
WLS-TV reported the condition of the suspect who was driving was not known immediately but he was expected to survive.
Happy Holidays, everyone!
