A $250,000 arrest warrant has been issued by a Snohomish, Washington judge for the capture and detainment of Curtis Anton Beseda, who video security tapes revealed to be the man who groped an 11-year-old girl at a Fred Meyer store on January 27th. Beseda is an honored hero of the anti-choice movement, who was found guilty of fire-bombing abortion clinics in Everett and Bellingham in the 1980s.
At least eight witnesses have identified Beseda as the same man seen in surveillance tapes that were made available to the media Tuesday. Beseda’s vehicle is missing and he has not been to his apartment in several days. Prosecutors on the case announced that Beseda, 58, was charged Friday with first-degree child molestation.
Beseda became a convicted martyr for the anti-abortion movement in the 1980s after he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for arson at abortion clinics.
The out of work roofer was a regular protester outside the Feminist Women’s Health Center in Everett. He set three fires there in 1983 and 1984, eventually forcing the women’s health clinic to close. He also was convicted of an arson at a Bellingham clinic. He said that he had tried to burn down the clinics “For the glory of God.”
According to Heraldnet, Beseda was held in reverence by other anti-choice fanatics and was honored at a national banquet in 1995. He sent a letter from prison that was read at the banquet encouraging the attendees to support Shelly Shannon, an Oregonian woman who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for shooting a women’s health doctor in Kansas in 1993, as well as setting fire to six abortion clinics.
Beseda pressing against the girl from behind and leaning in to whisper in her ear. The girl said he wanted to pay for her drink and sneak it to her outside. Court papers said that Beseda then rubbed the girl’s backside, only backing away from her when a local Starbuck’s employee approached the two. Video tape of the incident shows Beseda touching himself as he walked away.
The girl said that Beseda made her “feel like the male was going to hurt her or take her from the store if she left with him,” according to the report from Prosecutor Lisa Paul.
The girl told her father right away, who then flagged down police in the parking lot of the store.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call 911 or the sheriff’s tip line at 425-388-3845.
