The story about the young boy who was liberated from his abusive home after being beaten and starved has taken an appalling turn: WPXI reports that investigators in Pennsylvania said the mother told the school not to feed the boy breakfast. According to police, during the 2012-2013 school year, the mother told the teachers at the Hempfeld Township school district that if her son had a large breakfast at home and would “overeat if he was fed again.”
School official reacted accordingly to this revelation: they contacted Children and Youth Services after the boy was found stealing food out of the garbage and hording food in his socks and shoes.
The boy’s “mother,” Mary C. Rader, and his “grandparents,” 58-year-old Dennis C. Beighely and 47-year-old Deana Beighley, are facing a raft of charges, including conspiracy to commit murder.
When he was found in June at the family’s home, he weighed just 25 pounds. The detective who specializes in child abuse cases, John J. Piatek, said of the boy:
He looked like a Holocaust victim. He had been beaten with a belt every time he tried to get food. He had three abscessed teeth and weighed 20 pounds when he was taken to Children’s Hospital. The starvation could have killed him. The abscesses in his teeth could have killed him.
According to Piatek, the only motive for the abuse seems to be that they disliked the child.
Yes, that’s right. They disliked the child, so they tried to kill him.
Mary Rader decided to home-school the 7-year-old last year. During that time, he wasn’t allowed outside of the house except to the back porch, where he sometimes ate bugs he caught. His usual meal consisted of small amounts of tuna and eggs, and he suffered regular beatings with a belt, usually when he tried to sneak food.
When a neighbor finally did see him on June 6, she called to report what she described as a “walking skeleton,” according to county welfare worker, Kendra Manning.
District Judge Brian Arthur was so shocked by the pictures presented in court and by the medical reports that he ordered the three defendants jailed with set bail at $100,000 each.
