Fox’s Laura Ingraham took some time to weigh-in on Monday’s Supreme Court ruling, claiming the liberal outrage over the decision is nothing but bluster. Insisting that the Court’s decision won’t really reduce anyone’s access to birth control, Ingraham claimed women’s rights advocates just have a “case of the vapors” and are supposedly using the situation for political points.
If you haven’t heard yet, the SCOTUS ruled Monday that closely owned companies like Hobby Lobby could restrict their health care plans from including access to contraceptives on the grounds that it was their “religious freedom.” Hobby Lobby, and the mouthpieces at Fox, seem to think that some forms of contraceptives are actually abortions in disguise and so believe that their religious beliefs trump the woman’s and her doctor’s right to decide her healthcare.
First off, it needs to be made clear that contraceptives are NOT abortifacients. By their very definition, contraceptives prevent conception, and if nothing is conceived then there’s nothing to abort. Unfortunately the SCOTUS ruling said that just the fact that the Hobby Lobby owners believed that they were abortifacients was sufficient for them to opt-out of covering them.
The anger Ingraham is seeing from the Left is very real. Real outrage that a business owner’s entirely baseless belief now trumps their own rights to proper healthcare. And her claim that women can just waltz down to Plan Parenthood assumes that Republicans haven’t already shut the local clinic down. Not to mention that, depending on the type of contraceptive required, she may be stuck with a sizable bill.
What Ingram and the Right need to admit is that this isn’t really about religious freedom at all. It’s really just another battle in the war on women. They have refused to support equal pay, attacked women’s rights to control her own body, and now they are further reducing access to contraceptives. The GOP has given up any pretense of trying to win women voters and is now just openly attacking them. But when women get upset about it apparently it’s just “the vapors”.
