A white South Carolina police officer has been charged with murder after video surfaced of him shooting an unarmed black man in the back, killing him.
After viewing video of the Saturday incident, in which North Charleston police officer Michael Slager shot a man identified by as 50-year-old Walter Scott, state investigators decided to charge Slager with murder.
“When you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said in a news conference
“If you make a bad decision, I don’t care if you’re behind the shield or just a citizen on the street, you have to live by that decision.”
According to local media, the incident began after Scott was pulled over for a broken taillight.
In the video, a brief scuffle between the Slager and Scott occurred before Scott turned to run away. Slager then fires several shots at the victim, who falls to the ground.
