A little over a week ago, a Michigan boy told his mother that he did not want to have a birthday party because he did not have any friends to invite. Jennifer, Colin’s mother, was heartbroken upon hearing her son’s remark. However, she was not going to allow him to feel unloved! Jennifer created a Facebook page called “Happy Birthday Colin” to give family members and friends the chance to let Colin know exactly how special he is. “I thought, if I could create a page where people could send him positive thoughts and encouraging words, that would be better than any birthday party,” she wrote on Facebook.
Jennifer posted on the page that Colin has disabilities that cause him to act out in school. Since children often don’t understand those with who live every day facing the sort of challenges Colin faces, the other kids largely avoid him. He eats alone in the office every day because he does not want to “force someone to be unhappy with his presence.” Jennifer told Wood TV that “‘Things like lights and sound and changes will cause him to melt down,” leading to Colin’s negative treatment from other children.
Jennifer intends to keep the page a secret (and increasingly difficult task) until his March 9 birthday. What Jennifer did not count on was the internet finding out about it! Since the initial posting, Colin’s story has quite literally made it around the world. To date, the page has accumulated 1.4 million “likes” in just over a week–a gesture that should show Colin that he is more loved than he thought.
Well-wishers from all corners of the globe have left messages of goodwill for the soon-to-be eleven year old Dr. Who fan (hint. hint.) and all-around awesome kid. The Rosenberg, TX police department left Colin a video message to let him know they heard his story and, of course, wish the young man a happy birthday.
If you would like to join in making sure that Colin has the best birthday ever, please go leave some love at the page. If you would like to send him a card or gift (once again, he loves Doctor Who) it can be sent to
