I’ve always loved American Sign Language. It’s poetic in its simplicity, in the way it flows, and in the hands of an experienced interpreter it’s a like a dance. In the spirit of the infamous scenes from Napoleon Dynamite and later Donnie Darko, I learned a few basic signs when I was in grade school. I didn’t have the same “this is stupid” reaction that the majority of my classmates did. I appreciated the connection between the movements and their meaning.
New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio held a press conference addressing New York City’s first Ebola patient, but it was his sign language interpreter who stole the show.
He is expressive and dramatic. He’s so good (or so bad) that some questioned whether or not he was a real sign language interpreter at all. Either way, here’s a reminder for all of us that if you don’t love what you do for a living, you’re not living.
