Ever wonder what the inside of a Planned Parenthood building, where they do abortions, looks like? Take a walk with me. First, we go through an uncomfortably close gauntlet of protesters thrusting gory fetus signs and shouting, “baby killer!” Then, we encounter a large, intense security guard who guides us through a metal detector. The building’s windows are bulletproof.
While the GOP works itself into a frenzy about closing “abortion clinics,” only three percent of the people in any Planned Parenthood waiting room have abortions. The rest are there for typical, but discounted, ob/gyn (obstetrician/gynecologist) services. Women get yearly pap smears, breast exams, and checkups. The facility also offers birth control and tests for pregnancy, STD’s (sexually transmitted diseases), and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards says three-fourths of her:
“Patients are low income. That’s 150 percent of poverty [$1471.24 a month for one].”
You might be totally surprised to find the rooms, where Planned Parenthood performs abortions, look more like your dentist’s office than the operating room that you probably imagined. Before our young patient reaches this room, she will talk to a social worker privately and receive all the options available to her, including adoption and parenting.
If she decides to have the abortion, the doctor and nurses monitor her vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration), and an ultra sound machine determines the age of the fetus. After the abortion and once she is stable, the patient goes to a curtained recovery room with a medical easy chair, where a nurse observes her recovery. Then she receives her care instructions, so she can go home the same day.
This is what the Republicans clamor to close down in their war on women. If men had babies, it would be a whole different situation. While Planned Parenthood does offer abortion services, this does ONLY comprise three percent of their total service offerings.
The most uncomfortable part of getting any procedure at Planned Parenthood is probably making your way through the throngs of protesters out front waving gross pictures and shouting disgusting and vile things at you.
