According to Christian broadcaster and American Family Association director, Sandy Rios, American Christians had best be ready: if the Supreme Court sanctions marriage equality, it may mean martyrdom.
That sounds serious:
That’s the definition of “martyrdom” — death is a prerequisite. Now here’s another word she doesn’t know:
Rios, the director of governmental affairs for the AFA and host of a daily radio program, didn’t specify what she meant — she didn’t even know what it’d look like — but her context and intent was very clear.
Standing Thursday before a gathering of right-wing nutters and Confederate revanchists, Rios told the audience that, “Homosexual marriage is going to bring about the tip of the spear of the battle we’re going to face,” and that, “your wives, your sisters, your children who now are going to be forced to go into public restrooms and share them with men dressed like women.”
And there’s going to be cats and dogs sleeping together in the streets! The sky is falling, the sky is falling!
“In Massachusetts, where homosexual marriage has been legal for 10 years, the stories would make the hair stand up on the back of your neck,” she said. I’m sure they’re hair-raising, but we’ll never really know, because she didn’t share any.
Christians are going to be faced with a choice if the Supreme Court strikes down laws banning gay marriage, according to Rios: “If they do, every single person in this room is going to be forced to make a choice, and I’m just telling you: Even if you don’t want to engage in this battle, you will and your people will, and you’d better stand.”
She’s just following what other right-wing anti-LGBT activists have warned when they said that the ruling was going to lead to “mass arrest of Christians in the United States.”
Rios told the audience to “stop playing it safe,” because the Bible encourages “bold action.”
“You must prepare for martyrdom,” Rios said. “I don’t know what it’s going to look like, but it’s coming.”
I’ve got one question: with this whole martyrdom thing — is this a “buy one Jesus, get 72 virgins free” package offer? If not, you people are getting screwed.
