Right-wing Christian “ethics” are an interesting and ugly field of study. Offering an example of this is patriarch of Welfare Dynasty, Phil Robertson, who crafted a macabre fantasy about the rape and murder of an atheist family to make a point about the necessity of having a bigger sociopathic bully watching over you.
He made the remarks on Friday while giving a speech at the Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast. The remarks later made headlines when Rick Wiles, a conservative Christian radio host, aired them on his program, “Trunews.”
Speaking to the religious gathering, Robertson told them that, “I’ll make a bet with you. Two guys break into an atheist’s home. He has a little atheist wife and two little atheist daughters. Two guys break into his home and tie him up in a chair and gag him.”
He continued with his story:
“Then they take his two daughters in front of him and rape both of them and then shoot them, and they take his wife and then decapitate her head off in front of him. and then they can look at him and say, ‘Isn’t it great that I don’t have to worry about being judged? Isn’t it great that there’s nothing wrong with this? There’s no right or wrong, now, is it dude?’”
Then, he imagined them cutting of the atheist’s genitalia:
Then you take a sharp knife and take his manhood and hold it in front of him and say, ‘Wouldn’t it be something if [there] was something wrong with this?’ ’But you’re the one who says there is no God, there’s no right, there’s no wrong, so we’re just having fun. We’re sick in the head, have a nice day.’
He concluded, saying, “If it happened to them, they probably would say, ‘Something about this just ain’t right.’”
He could’ve just read from Nineteen-Eighty-Four. Since that’s the right-wing Christian ethical outlook, he would’ve saved everyone the trouble: “Do you want to know what the future looks like, Winston? Imagine a human face, smashed under a Cross, forever.”
Looks to me like someone’s watched too much Game of Thrones. But since he wants to invoke brutal fiction, let’s do that:
Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. 18 But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him keep alive for yourselves. (Numbers 31:17-18)
What we have here is God telling the Hebrews to kick in the doors of their Midianite neighbors, kill the husband, and rape the women.
Huh. Something about this just ain’t right.
