Today’s school shooting in Oregon is 74th since the massacre in Newtown that took the lives of 26 people, the vast majority of which were 5 and 6-year-old children, and is also shockingly the 4th multiple shooting in just 6 days. At least one student is dead in the shooting, which occurred earlier today at a Portland High School. The shooter is also dead, but details are few at this point in time.
According to the gun safety group, Everytown for Gun Safety, this is the 74th time since the massacre at Sandy Hook that “a firearm was discharged inside a school building or on school or campus grounds, as documented in publicly reported news accounts.” This count also factors in universities and colleges, such as the UCSB shooting that happened recently.
This is also the latest in a line of multiple shootings, beginning with a shotgun attack at Seattle Pacific University, then an armed assault on a Georgia Courthouse, and most recently, the shooting in Las Vegas.
According to CNN, the shooter was a student at the school who died from a self-inflicted gunshot. The gunman is believed to have used a rifle, and the incident happened at 11:00am EST, while classes were in session.
Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber, issued a statement saying:
“My heart is heavy after learning of this morning’s tragic events at Reynolds High School. My thoughts and prayers are with students, staff and the Reynolds High School community.”
