In this day and age you’re hard pressed to find a journalist who is willing to go toe to toe with a politician on either side of the aisle when it comes to any issue. It seems like those conducting interviews sometimes are more worried about losing the chance to get more interviews in the future than they are about exposing when politicians are just outright lying about a topic. So imagine our surprise when we saw the clip below that features an interview between CNN’s Wolf Blitzer and Rep. Michele Bachmann, and in it Blitzer presses Bachmann several times when she does what Michele Bachmann does best.
Blitzer was interviewing Bachmann over her support for shutting down the government if Obamacare is not de-funded. “If you don’t agree with the law, there are ways to try to change it, but you don’t have the votes as we just saw in the Senate,” said Blitzer during one heated exchange. He went on to ask Bachmann if she felt it was okay for people who can afford health insurance, especially under the lower rates of the ACA, and that choose instead to freeload off the taxpayers. She gave a boilerplate response about how more people will be covered by the taxpayers under Obamacare than now. When Bachmann tried to imply it’s mostly only “illegal aliens” (when oh when will the right stop using this terribly stupid, inaccurate and offensive term?) using only the emergency rooms as their primary health care, Blitzer just said, “That’s another subject.”
The best and most surprising moment came when Blitzer just flat-out called Bachmann out for lying. Sure, he didn’t call her a liar, but he got about as close to doing so as his journalistic professionalism would let him. It started when Bachmann said, “We know now the estimate from the government is that about 30 million people are going to be cut off their employer’s health insurance because of Obamacare.” Blitzer clearly knew that number was just ridiculous hyperbole and he said he didn’t know where she got those numbers from. Bachmann gave he oh-so-erudite response of simply, “the government.”
That’s when Blitzer just plainly looked at Bachmann and said, “That’s not true. You’re going to have to show me those numbers.” It’s nice to see Blitzer’s spinal transplant surgery was a success, and let’s hope that in the future if more TEApublicans are interviewed by him that he’ll show just as much courage to stand up to any lies they might spout as well.
