I’m a fairly anti-gun liberal, and I know many more like me. Being from one of the more dangerous cities in the country certain shades my perspective towards guns and gun violence, but I personally do not own a gun. I’m not alone in that respect either, but one of the things that I’ve heard gun owners and guns’ rights activists say in the past is that “you’d change your mind if you fired a gun.” BuzzFeed recently posted a video on Facebook, testing that hypothesis with 5 anti-gun liberals.
The video begins with an interview of each liberal — Allison, Hillary, Abe, Daysha, and Gaby — explaining their position on guns. Hillary feels that there shouldn’t be any gun ownership at all, while Abe points out that our death rate from guns makes us a laughing stock on the world stage.
After the interviews, they’re taken to the shooting range and introduced to the first weapon they’ll be firing: a 9mm. While they are shooting, their thoughts are recorded, and some insightful points are made: Allison comments how exhausting it is to fire a gun, highlighting that firing a gun takes work, and firing it reliably usually means hours clocked in at the shooting range.
Then, they’re introduced to the shotgun, and allowed to fire that.
One common theme from their experience seems to be the power trip of owning a firearm, and how “badass” it makes a person feel.
I won’t spoil anything about the conclusion, but you can watch the video below. It’s insightful for gun-control advocates and guns’ rights advocates.
