One of the most memorable moments at this year’s BET Awards was a short montage featuring Chris Rock interviewing white people at a Monster Truck Rally, or as he put it, “the whitest place I could find.” Rock questioned several attendees about the BET Awards, inquiring as to whether they even knew what BET is. The results were hilarious.
After Rock asked one man if he was looking forward to watching the BET Awards the man responded, with a good natured, if somewhat drunk looking grin, “BET Awards? I don’t know which awards that is.”
When asked what his favorite show on BET is another man told him, “it would help if I knew what BET was.”
One of his
victims interviewees did know what BET was although she was at a loss to tell him what NWA stands for, venturing that maybe it was “national white association.”
Rock seemed to thoroughly enjoy asking many of those he spoke to to complete a line from hip hop artist Drake’s “Started from the Bottom” which amused a great many Twitter users. It was also a feat that only one managed to accomplish, seeming to amaze Rock who had not expected anyone from this crowd to know those lyrics. Rock asked him if he had ever dated a black woman to which the man replied, “oh, I wish.” Rock then asked if he had ever tried to date a black woman and, after getting an affirmative answer, what she had said.
“She didn’t say much,” the man laughed, “she just walked off.”
Rock then asked if that was the only time he tried to which the man laughingly replied, “I was afraid after that.”
“I’m afraid of black women too,” Rock assured him.
Some of his best responses came when he was asking people who they thought should win an award, the answers could be seen to be very telling if one wanted to read a subtext into them with more than one suggesting either Macklemore or Eminem although one woman, when asked if she thought Macklemore should win said, “but it’s Black Entertainment Television so I don’t know if he could be nominated.”
