We have all heard, on a daily basis, from Fox News and right-wing talk radio about the “liberal media” and how they have failed to hold President Obama’s feet to the fire, offering him a pass on all of his “failures.” But is the media really all that “liberal?” In a commentary on The Young Turks on Thursday Cenk Uygur delivered a convincing argument that the media hasn’t been at all kind to the president.
He began by noting that he has been critical of the president on many occasions himself:
“I have not been overly kind to President Obama, I think that he did not bring us the change that he promised. I think he is pretty much the establishment, in fact I’ve said, in the past, that if he had a wrestling nickname it would be ‘The Establishment.'”
He went on to say that he must be judged taking into consideration the Washington political system that he has to work within, and if he is judged using that standard he has actually been fairly successful — although he has not gotten any credit for his successes by anyone in the media.
For example: as Fox News and talk radio shouted from the rooftops that the $1.2 trillion deficit inherited from the Bush administration was Obama’s to own, the rest of the media followed their lead and joined the chorus, yet no one has said a word about the deficit being reduced by more than half under his administration.
There is much more: unemployment reduced from double digits to under 6 percent, the alternative energy development program — never intended to turn a profit which has, in fact, returned a $30 million profit, Obamacare which was supposed to be a huge failure by sending premiums soaring and reducing competition has seen many premiums go down and a 20 percent increase in the number of participating insurers.
