A few days ago, a new organization by the name of Work Center Watch began polluting the Twitterverse with anti-union, anti-protest garbage intended to discredit Black Friday activists. Actively working to demonize groups like Our Walmart, Restaurant Opportunities Center, and Fast Food Forward, the months-old group began practically spamming anti-worker propaganda across its Twitter feed.
In this video, we see the seedy underbelly of the “anti-job-creator” movement’s professional protesters. Oh, but these aren’t just any “professionals.” These guys sleep till 2 pm, get drunk, eat stale pizza, figure out what they are protesting against — and these secret union provocateurs are off to destroy your job!
According to Work Center Watch, anyone who actively tries to improve the working conditions of the proletariat — anyone who demands a living wage is simply a sleazy, jobless bum someone pulled off the streets to demonize the glorious bastions of upward mobility that are America’s corporations — like Walmart.
This particular propaganda video urges you to forget about the plight of American workers. “This Black Friday, just buy your gifts, not their lies,” says the disembodied voice that ends the smear piece against those who would dare challenge the almighty job creators.
Kefauver has spent the past year touring the county, lecturing business groups on methods of combating “alt-labor,” or labor-aligned nonprofits. In one presentation in front of the National Retail Federation, he discussed ways to combat a number of issues, like a liveable minimum wage, paid time off, the retention of the 40-hour work week, and protections of wage theft.
Some may see the rise of an organization such as Kefauver’s as a bad thing, working to undermine the rights of workers. However, what its very existence says is important to consider: we’re scaring them. When you see protests on Black Friday (or Thanksgiving) if you choose to participate in that disgraceful example of commercialism…consider joining them. The overpriced junk on which you just got a “great deal” comes at the expense of their livelihood.
