If this hilarious gun safety ad doesn’t shame half of America’s parents into locking up their weapons, we don’t know what will. So, now, how do we get through to the other half? (Got ideas? Please leave your ideas in the comments below.)
Evolve, the group behind the ad, proclaims themselves as “a third voice” in the gun control debate. They aim to steer clear of divisive gun politics and take a new approach towards preventing the next tragedy: Good marketing. And why not? Waiting for our GOP-led Congress to pass legislation is like waiting for Hell to freeze over (an actual possibility, thanks to the GOP’s lack of action on climate change).
If the ad industry can persuade the world to consume 1.7 billion servings of Coca-Cola per day — a substance also used by frugal household experts for cleaning stubborn toilet bowl rings — then surely it can promote gun safety and the real kind of “responsible gun ownership”:
Evolve will make safety and saving lives aspirational, through mass media campaigns that ignite conversations. We will do this through mass communications channels – TV, major websites, YouTube, mass transit — talking to people in their living rooms and where they conduct their lives.
Evolve claims it “was founded at the kitchen table. A place where the most important conversations seem to happen,” and we strongly suspect it was the kitchen table of some Madison Avenue power couple. But if their PSAs make truly responsible gun ownership the new normal, who cares?
In Evolve’s latest ad — produced by McCann Erickson — A mom arrives at another mom’s house to pick her son up from a play date, and asks, “Did Kyle behave himself?” The second mom smiles and assures her, “Of course! He was an angel.”
“I’m so glad,” responds the other mom, then she calls out, “Kyle? We’ve gotta go, Mommy’s got an appointment.”
Suddenly, the boys burst loudly out the door wearing helmets and waving light sabers… Only… um… they’re not light sabers. Actually, they’re mommy number two’s long, bright pink and purple dildos. And they’re making buzzing noises. The second mom’s bright smile slowly slides into a frozen mask of mortification, as a voice over intones:
“If they find it, they’ll play with it… so always lock up your guns.”
