A finer example of how blind the extreme right is when it comes to Islam could not be found than the rant from Brigitte Gabriel, founder of Act for America. On CNN this Sunday, Gabriel’s ravings came across as all the more shrill and intolerant as Islamic activist Linda Sarsour remained poised, calmly dismantling Gabriel’s Islamaphobia.
Host Brian Stetler opened the segment with a series of clips looking at how Fox News portrays Muslims, beginning with the ever fair and balanced Sean Hannity who launched a segment on his show called “Radical Muslims on the March” with a dire warning of a “jihad that is raging worldwide.”
Stetler points out that this is a regular theme on Fox: extreme anti-Islam sentiment of a tin hat squad whose members see an Islamic terrorist hiding behind every blade of grass.
When challenged by Stetler to defend her claim that between 15 and 25 percent of all Muslims are radicals who want nothing more than to see us all dead, Gabriel insisted that the estimates come from “the combined intelligence of the Australians, the Canadians, the Jordanians, the Israelis, the United States.”
“You’re saying that 180 million to 300 million Muslims are radicals?” Stetler asked incredulously.
Gabriel backpedaled, explaining that it sounded like a large number until you look at the total number of Muslims in the world and then you can see that the majority are peaceful.
“Brian, Miss Gabriel speaks out of both sides of her mouth,” said a calm and smiling Sarsour, “First of all, in one breath she’ll say ‘the west must support moderate Muslims and moderate Muslims must speak up against terrorism,’ and in the same breath she’ll say, ‘peaceful Muslims are irrelevant.'”
She said that Gabriel should make up her mind, she isn’t even sure of what constitutes being a radical Muslim.
“When asked by Australian news, she said a radical Muslim is someone who prays five times a day, someone who believes in the world of the Qur’an, which is the Muslim holy book, someone who believes the prophet may peace be on him is a perfect man. That’s basically every Muslim.
So, I have no idea what she means. Where is the room for moderate Islam?”
