Conservatives generally like to think of themselves as the “tough love crowd” — self-referential for the “tough s**t crowd.” It’s hard to say whether an absolute deficit in empathy makes a person conservative, or whether becoming conservative simply gives those properly inclined all the excuse they need to be uncaring jerks. The link between conservatism and the utter lack of human empathy has been studied well enough to become canon at this point…but it’s always interesting when it manifests itself so clearly.
In this clip, Rachael Maddow delivers to us a fascinating glimpse into the mind of the conservative; in this case, via an Al Jazeera interview with an Ohio state legislator named Jim Buchy. Buchy is the co-sponsor of a bill that would outlaw all non-medically necessary abortions in his home state. He’s an outspoken proponent of abortion bans, who spends a great deal of his time thinking the subject over.
Obviously, he never bothered to ask what many of us would consider the most important question of all. Watch the video, and appreciate that moment of utter confusion on Buchy’s face as his brain attempts to align itself with the concept of empathy. In that moment, you have to ask yourself: Is being conservative a choice, or are unfeeling jerks just born that way?
