It was a report that was said to be a year in the making! “60 Minutes” produced a riveting special on Benghazi that emboldened Conservative fervor in uncovering the truth about President Obama’s treachery. Dylan Davies, who had already falsified a report to his employer, told CBS a harrowing tale of his heroic return to the Consulate to aid his brothers in arms–including scaling a wall to take down an attacker, and seeing Ambassador Stephens. CBS admitted to awareness of the lie, and claimed that Davies falsified the report to protect himself. After all, Davies provided the same story to the FBI as he did to CBS…right?
Unfortunately for Mr. Davies and CBS, the account with which Davies regaled them did indeed differ from the FBI report. Davies told the FBI, just like he did his employer, that he was nowhere near the compound that night. Backed into a corner, CBS pulled the report and apologized for the inclusion of Davies — promising to issue a correction.
Lara Logan did, indeed deliver on that promise. This matter was of such importance to CBS, that it saved until the very end of the show. Lara Logan launched into an informative, in-depth explanation of why they trusted Mr. Davies and why CBS continued to defend the report for so long. She issued a sincere apology, and provided assurances that steps would be taken to ensure that such a tragic thing will not ever happen again.
Lara glanced over the details that were misreported, offered a hurried apology while failing to mention any ramifications for the individuals involved in the journalistic train-wreck that was CBS’s Benghazi report. No mention was made of any attempts to review the reporting that went into the Benghazi failure, or any plans to change policies and procedures in an effort to ensure that nothing like this will ever happen again.
It’s OK, though. They’re “sorry.”
