Do not adjust your computer speakers or display settings. This is indeed a video of Senator John McCain, a devout Republican if ever there was one, taking the Tea Party caucus that drove our country’s government to shutdown to task. McCain is a mercurial figure to say the least.
He’s undoubtedly hawkish and represents a rather Neo-Conservative foreign policy belief that most Americans are just not buying into anymore. He’s also at times had no problems calling out members of his own party for their behavior, earning him the title of “maverick” on the Hill. In other words, McCain tells it like it is, and this clip is no exception.
Speaking on Fox News, McCain pulled no punches on his tea-drinking colleagues. The Fox host first asks Senator McCain how the White House has handled the shutdown, and of course he had to get his dig in on the president,
“I think it’s been terribly handled by the White House, but let’s have a little straight talk, Martha,” and that’s when McCain showed the vintage maverick in full-view, saying,
“They wouldn’t have had the opportunity to handle it that way if we had not shut down the government on a fool’s errand that we were not going to accomplish.”
That “fool’s errand” he was referring to was shutting down the government over Obamacare.
Later, McCain asked a question that many of us have been dying to ask Republican voters for the last three years. “Shouldn’t the people who created this situation where shutdown the government — where they were able to take advantage — shouldn’t they be held accountable too?”
