Some people say Russell Brand is a genius…though in fairness those people probably number fewer than those who say Sean Hannity is not. Just the other day we published a clip from The Young Turks’ Cenk Uyger — no intellectual slouch himself — commenting on Hannity’s screaming interview with The Jerusalem Fund’s Yousef Monayyer, which ended with “I’ll kick [Hannity’s] ass all day long.”
Now, The Second Coming himself has issued his own commentary on the Monayyer interview, and Hannity himself.
Brand, who once attended a U.K. session of Parliament dressed as Guy Fawkes, has plenty to say not only on Hannity, but on the cultural and historical context of the Palestine-Israel conflict. Here are some of the highlights. But, for the record…as much as we’d like to see Cenk “kick Hannity’s ass all day long” in a debate, somehow we suspect Hannity wouldn’t have an ass left to kick when Brand got done with him.
Here’s the video:
BRAND, Speaking of Hannity’s background graphic: “In the background, it says the words ‘SYMPATHY FOR THE TERRORISTS,’ and there’s pictures of people in balaclavas firing rockets. So I think it’s already clear Sean’s got an angle.”
HANNITY: “Interestingly, there was no mention of the terrorist group Hamas, and their role in this conflict. After all, they started this conflict.” BRAND: “Bit childish.”
BRAND: “Sean’s not a solution-based guy…Sean’s thinking ‘we want conflict. What things can I say to exacerbate conflict.”
BRAND, speaking of Hamas’ terrorist behavior: “Necessarily, the side of inferior resources has to use more desperate tactics. So, like, big countries like America or Britain or Israel have proper militaries, proper military resources. But small countries like Palestine…they don’t have an army. They don’t have one. So if they’re in any way going to try to defend themselves, it’s going to be through what we would perceive as acts of terror. But that’s just language, really…Like, if I’m sort of beating up someone with a variety of weaponry, and they’re jabbing me with a pin, I’d be like “AGH! The ‘pin technique?!’ You’re an ANIMAL!’ But that’s the only thing they have to defend themselves. But it’s still out of order, the pin…it would hurt and everything. But don’t remove all context except for the information that’s convenient to you.”
BRAND: “I see what Sean is saying; he’s just saying incendiary words. ‘Rockets! Kidnapper! Murder! Little baby ducking, kicked in the FACE!’ These are just things that are bad.“
BRAND: “What are we looking for…a solution, or just a verdict on who’s bad? Because that’s not going to get us anywhere.”
BRAND, imitating Hannity: “I didn’t take a job on Fox News because I’m interested in progress. I’m interested in SHOUTING, and POINTING, and SIMPLIFYING THINGS!”
BRAND, speaking of Hamas using children as shields: “They’re not using children as shields; those children are dying because missiles are going off all over the place, and Gaza’s only a little tiny area. But, like, even if they were, even if everyone was like carrying around with children literally strapped to wooden boards using them as shields, they still wouldn’t die if you didn’t shoot them with missiles. So I think the key ingredient in the death of those children is the missile, and not the using them as shields.”
Further, on children as human shields:
“Which I don’t think happens. That’s dehumanization. These children are the children of people. People like us. Once you start saying people don’t love their children, that’s the end — that’s how genocide starts.“
