Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) was in Okoboji, Iowa on Monday to attend a fund raising event for Representative Steve King (R-IA), famous for his remarks about “Dreamers” last summer when he said that “for everyone who’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there who weigh 130 pounds — and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”
As the pair were eating lunch at a local restaurant, Erika Andiola, an immigration activist who is herself a Dreamer, having been brought to the country when she was 11 years-old by her parents, approached their table and introduced herself to King. As soon as she told King that she was a “Dreamer” Paul put down the hamburger he had just begun to eat, seeming to choke a bit and rose to flee from the table.
Andiola joked about Paul’s flight in a Tweet later Monday night:

“I know you want to get rid of DACA,” Andiola said to King, offering him her DACA ID card. “If you really want to get rid of it, just go ahead and rip mine.”
King began by telling her he was not referring to people like her, insisting he was only talking about drug smugglers. When Andiola continued to try to make her point, King aggressively grabbed her arm in an attempt to silence her.
“You’re very good at English,” he told her, apparently amazed that a young woman who has lived in the United States since she was 11 and who graduated with honors from Arizona State in 2009 has actually mastered the language she grew up with.
You can watch the conversation in the video below, but don’t watch for Senator Paul to come to his friend’s rescue, he never returned.
