Arizona State Rep. John Kavanagh entertained the crowd a roast of Sheriff Joe Arpaio with the typical bigoted jokes conservatives love–taking stabs at Muslims, Hispanics, and insulting the LGBT community. You know, “freedom” stuff.
Kavanagh, who voted in favor of the “not discriminatory in the least” LGBT discrimination legislation, used the controversy over the bill to not only insult Arizona’s LGBT population, but Muslims as well. “A lot of people claim that SB 1062 is gonna cause discrimination based upon religion in Arizona. And I scoffed at that until tonight. When a Muslim waiter serving up here walked up to Sheriff Joe, wouldn’t give him his dinner, ’cause he said ‘I don’t serve swine,” Kavanagh “joked.”
Under the guise of a “roast,” the lawmaker joked about Sheriff Joe’s harassment of the Arizona Hispanic population to tumultuous applause from the gathered not-racists. I’m not the federal monitor. How many Hispanics did you pull over on the way over here, Arpaio?”
He followed up by making light of Arizona’s “Show Me Your Papers” legislation for which Kavanagh himself voted–a law that has led to a number of difficulties for Hispanic-Americans in the state. “Sheriff Joe is the kind of guy that you gotta love. As long as you have papers,” Kavanagh quipped.
Kavanagh has previously drawn fire for his statement that “illegals” who were “Canadians” could “stay” in Arizona because they have money. He later said he was “just kidding.”
Roasts typically include many off-color comments that would not be acceptable anywhere else in society–that’s kind of the point–but, Kavanagh went above and beyond, offering only “jokes” that seem to simply reflect his own hateful views (and, of course, Arpaio’s).
Despite that he was making light of bills he supported, Kavanagh says that the comments do not reflect his views of minorities. “They are creating controversy where it doesn’t exist, perhaps for their own political purposes. This was a roast. It was satire and it was at a private closed event, so I disagree with them.”
Yes, he was “roasting” Sheriff Pink Handcuffs. However, he missed the point of a roast: The jokes are supposed to be directed at the person being honored (though we are hesitant to use the word “honor” with regard to a man who, at every turn, does something awful).
This wasn’t a roast. This is how John Kavanagh really feels.
Listen to Kavanagh’s idiotic remarks for yourself!
