On Wednesday Rachel Maddow retreated to her “man cave” to put the men watching more at ease, utilizing the help of Dr. Stephanie Teal of the University of Colorado Hospital to explain the workings of IUD birth control devices.
Maddow chose Colorado for her mini-seminar because Bob Beauprez, the Republican candidate for governor has made outlawing IUDs a campaign issue, claiming that women who use them are “abortion factories” having an abortion every month. Oblivious to the science, Beauprez claims that IUDs are abortifacients and should not be allowed.
Maddow and Teal noted that Colorado has been very successful in reducing teen pregnancy rates, in part by promoting the use of IUDs by a demographic that they were originally not intended for: teens and young women who have not yet started a family. The original population the devices were intended for was married women who already had children, but Dr. Teal said that they are ideal for younger women whose lifestyle may make it impractical to take a pill at the same time every day.
When Maddow’s producer asked Dr. Teal why so many claim that the IUD causes an abortion she responded with a somewhat puzzled look saying:
“I don’t know. I think that the people who argue about it really are politicians and they thrive on difference.”
