Something unprecedented happened on Sunday. The battle within the Republican Party went to a whole new level. After welcoming Tail Gunner Ted Cruz to his show, Chris Wallace said to his gues Karl Rove that he had received research opposing him from other Republican Senators along with some suggested questions.
“This has been one of the strangest weeks I’ve ever had in Washington,” Wallace said. “As soon as we listed Ted Cruz as our featured guest this week, I got unsolicited research and questions — not from Democrats but from top Republicans — to hammer Cruz.”
“This was a strategy laid out by Mike Lee (R-UT) and Ted Cruz without any consultation with their colleagues,” Rove replied. “With all due respect to my junior Senator from Texas, I suspect this is the first time that the end game was described to any Republican Senator. They had to tune in to listen to you to find out what Ted’s next step was in the strategy.”
Of course, this means nothing to Cruz. He decided the day that he was sworn in that he could be the leader just by having the loudest voice.
Rove, of course, is not the only committed conservative who has said that what Cruz wants to do has no chance of succeeding. Fox commentator Charles Krauthammer seems to agree. Just this morning, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) said repeatedly on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal that the Cruz plan was not doable and that it was going to harm GOP.
Rachel Maddow of course found this story irresistible, saying that TEApublicans are, “tearing each other apart like they’re a bag of blindfolded, hungry weasels who someone dosed with PCP.”
“Does this happen with Democrats? Democratic Senators?” she asked. “When Democratic Senators get booked on a Sunday morning news shows, do other Democratic Senators in Washington send unsolicited research and questions to the host of that show to advise the show on how to destroy their fellow Democrat?”
Rachel pointed out that this fight is one which is going on entirely within the party, there are no Democrats involved. It is between the far-right fringe TEApublicans and the “old school” Republicans. The ones who the TEApublicans disdainfully refer to as RINOs. This would not be of concern to most of us if not for the fact that the TEApublican extremists have made it clear that they do not care if the collateral damage destroys the economy and the government.
Watch Rachel make them look foolish in the video below.
