“Moral relativism.” There’s a time and a place for it in all cultures, and all situations. Understanding the behaviors of people of other beliefs, and putting them into the appropriate context, is the lynch pin of understanding itself. But, unfortunately for one group of Neo-Nazis, that time isn’t now, that place isn’t North Dakota, and about 200 Native Americans already understand a Hell of a lot more about white supremacists than they’d like.
The National Socialist Movement split off from the American Nazi Party in 1974, and has since grown into the nation’s largest Neo-Nazi organization. The National Socialist Party was the same that marched on the Jewish Community of Skokie, Ilinois in 1977, and were subsequently defeated by The Blues Brothers in 1980. Having apparently learned its lesson from its predecessors, the modern NSM decided to avoid large cities (where anybody might show up with a full tank of gas and half a pack of cigarettes) and take over the small town of Leith, North Dakota.
“It’s fine for all these other minorities, but not us,” he said in the interview. “If you merely speak about [civil rights for whites], you’re going to be defamed in this country.“
This isn’t Cobb’s first shot at establishing a Nazi paradise, either. In 2006, he moved to the Baltic state of Estonia and started the Podblanc (“white pod”) video sharing service. At the time, he had this to say about the US political system.
“I believe that the Democrat and Republican criminal syndicates that run the US with international jewry’s [sic] criminal syndicate cannot now be stopped,” he wrote. “Media barrages too much control the minds of White Americans.”
But apparently, even cavemen aren’t as welcome in Estonia as Pauly Shore would have us believe, and Cobb eventually oozed his way back to these shores, banking in the relationship he’d developed with the National Socialists while he wasn’t shooting kiddie porn in Estonia.
Nazi leader Jeff Schoep, says that the town will be a place for Nazis to live among themselves, in a fairytale land of Aryan perfection. Kind of like Northeast Philadelphia. He likes to use phrases like “white civil rights” to describe the movement, in reference to the terrible persecution that whites have historically suffered in Amerika. He addressed the matter at the Leith Town Hall on Sunday, giving this statement to Reuters:
“We have to start somewhere. So if we start in small towns and spread out from there, it’s sort of a test ground in that sense, where if we’re able to get off the ground here, then we’re able to get off the ground in other places.“
(Later that day, this posting went up on Craigslist in Bismarck, ND: “White man wanting black stud, 8-plus only. Near virgin.” Though that could be just a coincidence.)
But Mr. Shoep, his ebony stud and all of his Nazi followers may not get the peaceful Aryan paradise they’re looking for — because about 300 protesters showed up to make life a little less peaceful.
Those protesters included about 200 Native Americans from nearby reservations, who played a pivotal role in organizing the protest. The crowd chanted things like:
“Creepy Nazis, Ku Kluzers, get the Hell out of here!”
Scott Garman of Fargo yelled through a loudspeaker “This is not a one-time, one-day thing. We will be here until you are gone.” He then painted his face blue and yelled “THIS IS WHERE WE STOP THEM!” while shooting lighting bolts from his arse. Which he learned from a different antisemite.
Make no mistake: This is no half-hearted Occupy Wall Street. Mayor Shock wants nothing to do with the Nazis, and is considering permanently unincorporating the city so it no longer has a government to take over. Now THAT’S commitment.
Of course, some might say that douchebags of all varieties have a right to live wherever they choose. The conservative bloggers at Sayanythingblog.com are predictably playing Devil’s advocate, stating that the protest is doing more harm than good.
“It has to be cathartic to show up and scream at nazis. To call them names, mock their movement and denounce their bigoted ideology. I’ll bet that feels good, particularly for the large Native American contingent on hand who know a thing or two about racism, but what does it accomplish? Very little, as the right of these nazis to organize, hold meetings and purchase property is as sacrosanct as it is for any of the rest of us. Protesting isn’t going to stop them.
“In fact, protesting gives them the one thing they need desperately from outside of their movement, and that’s attention.“
So, here we come to the core of the issue. SHOULD we just ignore them? They only want to live apart, right? They have the right to do that, as much as anyone else.
Well, they could have done that just by moving to Leith and saying nothing. The county is already 97% white, which means that in a town of 24 people, there’s literally ONE non-white-guy living there. And that guy is probably Tyrone Biggins. The place was already one burning cross short of an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog. There was no need to fly the swastika or “build” a community of whites, except to fly the swastika and scream hate in public. You can clearly hear the Nazis’ message of love and acceptance coming from the church in the background of the video.
So, this movement isn’t about living apart — like all things Nazi, it’s about militantly spreading the ideology, and attracting adherents. It’s about swimming in a sea of hate and pathetic self-supremacy, unchallenged by the realities of the outside world. It’s the Teabagger’s mind made manifest, and a seed of hate. Der Fuhrer said so himself.
But, to Hell with it, right? This is America. It’s not like a bunch of psychos from the middle of nowhere stand any real chance of “taking over.” Let all of America’s potential Nazis head to Leith, rub up against each other on cold North Dakota nights. Maybe the natives from the surrounding reservations will give them some blankets, and a strain of Tuberculosis Ironicus will deal with them. It’s not as though fascism stands a chance of TRULY infiltrating our culture or economic structure, and the insane stupidity and ignorance of a small group self-serving douchebags isn’t going to make it to Congress. How could THAT happen?
Charles Koch, input from your Dad and your Nazi aunt Ilse would be appreciated here. You know, if she’s not too busy making shoes from the skin of Jewish babies.
“Moral Relativism.” It’s the belief that we should understand, and try to relate to those of other cultures. That we should take their perspectives into context, and let them live their cultures uninhibited. Do we really have a right to judge these Nazis? To say that what they do, and what they ARE, is wrong?
Moreover, is it wise to stand in the way of evil? Evil men do serve a purpose: they draw out the evil in others, cause the darkness that might subtly influence every little decision to rise to the surface and take form. Evil men draw out hate, concentrate it, draw attention to it and ultimately allow us to face our demons in open combat. Should we really stand in its way as it grows, if it serves to draw out the poison in our society?
F*CK those guys.
