Newport, North Carolina Coast — Police say the argument started over barking dogs; which, to be fair, will drive almost anyone slightly insane. Most people pushing past that particular brink of insanity will shoot the dogs…but 34-year-old Justin Mills seems a bit of an overachiever.
Mills was home with his fiance Heather Davis and her four-year-old son when it happened. At about 8:30 p.m. last night, with the dogs barking maniacally at whatever it is dogs bark at for hours on end, the three went outside to confront their neighbor about it.
What we know for a fact right now is that by the end of the argument, 54-year-old Michael LeClair lay shot on a grassy area just outside of his home. The shot, wasn’t fatal, but there’s a good chance LeClair wishes it were; suffice it to say he’ll likely be shopping for pants with a slightly longer inseam.
According to Davis, there’s a little more to this story than first appears, though; she says that during the argument, LeClair threatened to harm both her and her child, and that
“He did what had to be done in fear for not just his life, but our lives as well.”
Both Mills and her child heard LeClair threaten them, and they ran inside the house for safety immediately afterward. Police say LeClair was unarmed at the time; which isn’t to say he wasn’t planning on going back in the house for his own gun. Just that he didn’t make it there.
Right now, Mills is being held on $100,000 in bond on charges of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury.
