Bill Moyers said that the current group of extremists has “sucked the last bit of soul from the Grand Old Party of Abraham Lincoln.”
Any bit of soul that was left over after Nixon, Reagan, and a pair of Bushes.
Moyers calls out CNN for giving Newt Gingrich, the architect of the last shutdown, a national platform.
He feels that the former Speaker of the House (R-ethical and marital misconduct) is further fomenting the current gang in Congress.
What is the reward for being booted out of Congress by your own party for ethical breaches that cannot be ignored: both a run for President and more time on television than the Geico Gecko?
Back to topic.
Moyers is concerned about our system of government and laws when a small group can make outrageous demands that adversely harm the majority of the country.
He compares the situation now to people in the south a century and a half ago, who refused to relinquish their slaves and way of life and thus brought the country to war.
The President at the time, Abraham Lincoln (R- Emancipation Proclamation) would not allow a minority to subjugate a race of people.
Commenting about the events of today Moyers observed: “At least let’s name this for what it is — sabotage of the democratic process. Secession by another means. And let’s be clear about where such reckless ambition leads. As surely as night must follow day, the alternative to democracy is worse.”
The grown-ups in the Grand Old Party have to help fix this.
