Supporters cheered as they watched the results coming in Tuesday night as the scandal-ridden Republican Governor Bob McDonnell vacated the office and Republican runner Ken Cuccinelli narrowly fell short of the vote to Democrat Terry McAuliffe. This is the first time since 1885 that a Governor has only served one term in a particular party in Virginia before having to leave office. Before that, the only governor whose party only held that office for one term, in the state’s history was William E. Cameron of the Re-Adjuster Party. But somehow Republicans are still claiming this as a small victory for their party.
As Rachel Maddow pointed out:
“There are a lot of things that come up in the news, where you realize that the Republican Party and the conservative movement really is kind of in its own world, that it doesn’t have much interaction with the rest of the world.”
Accepting loss would require a person to live in reality. It’s safe to say that Cuccinelli and others in his party are far beyond any concept of what the reality they are facing truly is.
