John Stossel has never had a problem letting the world know how much he dislikes those who have nothing. Stossel frequently opines that they are somehow inferior human beings who have nothing because they deserve nothing. Why? Because they are just plain lazy, right? Now he would have us believe that everyone begging on the street is an alcoholic or an addict –scam artists trying to get others to support their habits.
He appeared on Fox and Friends to talk about a ‘scientific study’ that he had conducted on the streets of New York recently. Donning a disguise and holding a sign reading, “homeless and cold” and later one which read, “I’m not going to lie to you, I need a beer” he spent an hour on the street panhandling.
After that hour he said that he did pretty well, taking in a whopping $11.25 or $23,000 a year “tax-free.” Stossel then suggested that the homeless are doing really well and that they are just a bunch of lazy con artists. Perhaps his next experiment should be trying to survive for a year in New York City on that $23,000.
Asked by Steve Doocey if he was believed that no one should give money to a panhandler Stossel said, “Yes, and it’s not I who am suggesting that. The people who work with the homeless say don’t give them money, it’s a bad thing, you’re an enabler, you’re enabling their alcohol or their drug habit. And far better to, if you really think they’re for real, and most are not, to try to help them get to one of the social service agencies.”
His hatred for those who have the least is monumental, recently he suggested that the poor should be allowed to sell ‘spare’ organs to the wealthy so that more of them could survive serious illnesses while allowing the poor to support themselves with dignity instead of leeching off of government programs.
He conveniently overlooks the fact that many homeless shelters are full and that food pantries are empty. The charities which he thinks we should be directing these poor souls to are stretched to the limit and cannot help any more than they are already. It doesn’t matter to him, in his mind only the well to do are fit to survive in the Utopian world he envisions.
He had a golden opportunity here to expose the fact that many charities are not particularly charitable with most of the money they collect going to fund-raising activities and lining the pockets of those administering them. Instead he barely touches on that, instead choosing to belittle those who already have nothing.
No one would deny that there are those on the streets who are there due to their own failings but they are far from the majority. How about the multi-millionaires in Congress taking millions in subsidies while cutting food stamps? How about huge corporations making record profits and paying ZERO taxes? In typical libertarian fashion, Stossel attacks those who can’t fight back. Stossel should be ashamed, but he’s too stupid, uncaring, and evil for that.
