Jon Stewart opened last night’s Daily Show with a piece that he called “Rockin’ Shutdown Eve,” capitalizing on the gift to all late night comedians from the TEApublicans in Congress. Illustrating their “sky is falling” rhetoric, Stewart referred to Obamacare as, “The end of America as we know it for reasons no one is able to clearly explain.”
In the series of clips Stewart played, there was Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) who said, “Obamacare is about limitless government.” Next we hear Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) who claims, “We’re leading on protecting hard working Americans across this country that are feeling the over reach from the federal government.” Steve King (R-IA) spoke of, “The intrusion into God-given American freedom called Obamacare, an un-Constitutional takings of God-given liberty.”
“You’re just throwing words together,” Stewart said incredulously, before going on to use the old School House Rock classic “I’m Only a Bill” to demonstrate that the law was passed following the formula laid out by the Constitution.
The law was passed and signed in exactly the manner prescribed by the Constitution, even being vetted by the Supreme Court. Still, they insist that Obama and the Senate refuse to compromise, apparently unaware that the time for compromise has passed, it is law and there is no further debate.
Jon then used a football analogy, pointing out that the Giants lost to the Redskins on Sunday 31-7, but they didn’t announce that if they were not given another 25 points by midnight on Monday, they were going to shut down the NFL. “Wouldn’t it be nice if the United States Congress aspired to the maturity and problem solving capacities of football players?” Stewart asked.
In response to all of the noise from the right about how the President will sit down and talk about differences with Iran but not with them, Stewart said, “You’re not helping yourself if it turns out that President Barack Obama can make a deal with the most intransigent, hardline, unreasonable, totalitarian mullahs in the world, but not with Republicans, maybe he’s not the problem!”
