Comedian Jon Stewart of the Daily Show couldn’t believe the wave of racist responses to the Superbowl’s multi-lingual Coke commercial. The only thing cuter than the ad, Jon Stewart said, would have been a Precious Moments figurine where an orphan kid was holding a puppy to a soldier, with the words “I Wuv America” emblazoned beneath it. Stewart asked, “Were they bothered by the dangerous levels of schmaltz?”
Stewart challenged the notion that those upset with the ad seemed to have opinion that the immigrants coming into this country are not assimilating. Stewart said, “Assimilating? They’re singing ‘America The Beautiful’ while drinking Coca-Cola. How much more American assimilation can they have? Maybe if they were open-carrying a gun shaped like Jesus while using a bald eagle strap-on to f#%k an apple pie.”
Stewart then shows us our roots. A string of racist signs warning of the dangers of immigration targeting Jews, Greeks, Germans, Irish and Russians moves across the screen while Americans sing “America The Beautiful” in their languages.
