Rand Paul (R-KY) spoke at Howard University this week to try and spread the Republican message and reach out to African-American voters. Of course, all Paul really did was condescend, lie and basically make a fool of himself in general, likely rendering the entire trip counterproductive.
Jon Stewart from The Daily Show had a little lesson in historical context for Sen. Paul on last night’s show.
Rand Paul at Howard University on why Republicans are losing African-American votes:
The Republican Party hasn’t talked enough about the great history and interaction between the Republican Party and black history and voting rights in our country. The story of emancipation and of voting rights and of citizenships from Fredrick Douglas to the modern era is really the history of the Republican Party. We see horrible Jim Crow and horrible racism that happened in the 30s, 40s, 50s–it was all Democrats. It wasn’t Republicans.
Right, but for the most part those bigoted Democrats in the 30s, 40s and 50s became Republicans post the modern Civil Rights era, because of it. See, you can’t just yadda, yadda, yadda the last 60 Republican years! (Mocking Paul) “A Republican freed the slaves…gave black people the vote…yadda, yadda, yadda…now all blacks vote Democratic. I mean, what the hell?!”
