Jon Stewart cut through the right-wing FOX insanity regarding Bergdahl’s father, his beard, and the use of an Arabic prayer, getting to the heart of their attempts to paint the Elder Bergdahl (who is a registered Republican) as some sort of radical Muslim.
Stewart kicked things off by mocking FOX news’s rush to judgment regarding the events that transpired following Bergdahl’s capture, before dovetailing into the “criticisms” that the right-wing has been making regarding the Bob Bergdahl’s appearance, of all things — because according to FOX, anyone with a beard has a potential to be a terrorist.
[box type=”shadow”]You do know, not all Muslims have beards. And not all people with beards are Muslims. There’s a reason we call [it] the Abraham Lincoln Memorial, and not the Holy Shrine of the Blessed Imam Ibrahim Lincoln.[/box]
He played a clip of Bill O’Reilly very clearly demonstrating circular logic, telling his audience the reason he said Bob Bergdahl looks like a Muslim is because “Bergdahl looks like a Muslim.” Stewart said that he couldn’t argue with that logic, because it’s “impenetrable,” and then highlighted the phrase spoken by Bob Bergdahl in the Rose Garden that FOX News seized on — “Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim.”
Bridgette Sanchez breathlessly told FOX that the phrase was a “victory phrase” or a “phrase of conquest,” and that Bob Bergdahl using it was a declaration of victory for the Taliban, when in reality, it’s prayer. Stewart played a clip of Sean Hannity accusing the president of smiling while Bob Bergdahl said the prayer, and then said sarcastically, “Yes, Sean Hannity, that’s the president of the United States smiling as his comrade delivers the Muslim war conquer call in the Rose Garden, thus handing control of the United States of America to radical Islam. Is that what you were trying to say? I just want to make sure I’m receiving the full subtext of your boobery.”
