Last night on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Comedy Central’s news parody show hit two back-to-back home runs in both Stewart’s indictment of CNN’s coverage of the Washington, D.C. Naval Yard shooting and with the sketch he and his fellow “correspondents” did afterward. During the more broad coverage of the cable news networks’ insistence on covering breaking news with urgency instead of a focus on accuracy, Stewart ended the segment with comedic fury, condemning CNN’s coverage as being the most brazenly and perhaps even intentionally incorrect, choosing to seek forgiveness for mistakes later instead of getting the information out right the first time.
Stewart railed against CNN pointing to either banal facts that have no importance or relevance in an attempt to fill air space, or in putting out unconfirmed information as long as it kept the viewer’s attention. In summation, Stewart landed one of his signature knock-out blows. “The lesson they take from this is — it doesn’t matter how much they betray our trust, we’ll keep coming back. We’re in an abusive relationship with CNN! And it’s time we kicked those bastards to the curb. Because we have to remember — this network was created by Ted Turner, not Ike Turner.”
Then after the commercial break he and his team of correspondents sent-up CNN’s reporters and coverage in brilliant fashion, and so we just had to show you that clip too!
