On the Daily Show Wednesday night, Jon Stewart, serving as his own “senior correspondent” from New Jersey did an exemplary job of raking Governor Chris Christie over the coals for the inept and ham-fisted vengeance taken on the mayor of Ft. Lee, New Jersey, Mark Sokolich, for his failure to endorse the governor for re-election.
Stewart took umbrage at the lack of professionalism from the leaders of the state that created corruption and developed it into an art — an art that premium cable channels can’t get enough of. Where are all of those wildly successful series such as the Sopranos set? In New Jersey of course! He was embarrassed that corrupt and petty politicians from his home state could not better handle revenge.
“To see New Jersey sink to such a piss poor, third rate quality of corruption — this is New Jersey, a state renowned for its piss rich, first rate quality of corruption,” Stewart said.
He went on to illustrate his point by reminding us of ABSCAM in the 1980s, also in the 80s, David J. Friedland, a state Senator faked his death in a scuba diving accident in order to avoid jail in a kickback scandal. he goes on to point out that when HBO wanted to do a series on a culture of corruption they went to New Jersey and when they wanted to do it again, set in another era, they again went to New Jersey.
Governor Christie’s team however, even with the rich history of corruption in the state, handled this bit of petty retribution in the most inept manner. Bridget Anne Kelly, Chief of Staff to the Governor sent an email to a Christie appointee at the Port Authority telling him that it was, “time for some traffic problems in Ft. Lee.”
The appointee, David Wildstein, replied, “Got it.”
Telling them that they should be ashamed, Jon demonstrated how the conversation should have gone.
“Hey, did you take care of that thing?”
“Yeah, that thing? I took care of that thing. Yeah, our good friend Lee? Yeah, he’s constipated, alright.”
With all of the speculation about the Governor’s Presidential aspirations, this is an incident that he would have been better to have avoided in the first place. It doesn’t seem very Presidential to harbor such petty spite.
