Funny thing about lawyers of all kinds — you can at least trust they know the law better than people who aren’t lawyers. Yes, before Bill O’Reilly bought his first pocket Constitution, and long before the first Teabagger mouth-read “Wee Thar Peeeple” from his own bumper sticker, a Kenyan socialist graduated from Harvard magna cum laude (Latin: “really good”), and went on to teach Constitutional law at the University of Chicago.
But you have to wonder what he spent the 1990s teaching those students in Chicago. Presumably, he did nothing but spend 12 years lip synching to M.C. Hammer’s “2 Legit 2 Quit,” because it’s pretty obvious that that MORAN don’t know nothin bout the CONSTERTUSHIN! And if he do, he done spent his entire presidency shredding it…SHREDDING it!
Or so the pundits (Indian: “learned ones”) at Fox News would have us believe. As Jon Stewart points out in the segment below, since literally two weeks after he took office, Obama’s been laughing off charges of either not knowing the Constitution, or knowingly violating it against its will with Congolese abandon.
That charge has been resurrected and then some as of late, since Obama promised to use his executive powers to give protection to 5 million or so immigrant DREAMers at risk of deportation. Of course, Republicans are of course threatening another government shutdown over it, which according to Louisiana’s Bobby Jindal, would be Obama’s fault.
“I don’t think Obama should shut down the government,” he says. Straight face and all.
And obviously, Obama is acting way out of his legal jurisdiction on the matter. He himself said “I’m not the emperor of America” some years ago when asked about doing exactly the same. But that was when we thought there was a point in playing nice with the GOP. But now…”yeah, screw you guys. Amnesty, New Years.”
Boehner is already threatening impeachment hearings if Obama uses his legally granted authority to illegally subvert Congress on immigration — though you have to wonder why Saint Reagan and Bush weren’t impeached for doing exactly the same thing. It’s possible they just didn’t know better.
But, then again, neither one of them carried a little Constitution in their pockets.
