This video by the folks at Vox.com explains how politicians rig elections. They can do it so easily because, get this, we let them choose their voters! Seriously. But we might be able to fix it if we follow the lead of our neighbors to the north…
Here’s the video.
Of course, gerrymandering is only one aspect of how elections are rigged. Voter fraud is being used as a reason for voter ID laws, very popular in states with Republican legislatures. But these laws are just another way of disenfranchising voters.
The Brennan Center For Justice at NYU School of Law has released a thorough report on voter fraud. In it, they examine the various types of claims and allegations of voter fraud. Their findings? Voter fraud is mostly speculation.
Very few claims are substantiated — mostly they are Republicans committing fraud to “prove” that it happens. The great majority have been thoroughly debunked.
Of course, the right will continue to flog the issue because it enables them to cut Democratic voter rolls. And they know that they can’t win unless they cheat. They’ve been spreading the myth of voter fraud for years, they’ve done so well that 36% of Republicans believe it’s a widespread problem.
But, according to actual studies, the only thing that is widespread is the myth.
We can fix our election system. We can stop the gerrymandering by creating non-partisan panels to draw districts. We can prevent the few cases of voter fraud that do occur, but IDs aren’t the way to do that.
IDs only disenfranchise minority, student, elderly and disabled voters. We can fix the wait times, the inconvenient polling places, the understaffed polls, all of it. But we need to have a Congress that wants to fix it. But we can only get that by voting.
It is so important to VOTE. It really does count and apathy gets us… well, just look at the Congress we have. Any questions?
