It didn’t take the TEApublicans long to begin attacking the newly crowned Miss America Nina Davuluri. Almost before the crown was securely settled on her head the Twitterverse exploded with negative comments all showing the ignorance of the parties posting them. She was described as an Arab (dark hair and complexion), a Muslim (same reasoning) and by those who did understand that she is of Indian heritage, “Miss 7/11”. Seeing the reaction of the demographic that they appeal to Faux News was not about to be left out.
Faux News radio host, Todd Starnes opined that she does not “represent American values,” and that a better, more representative choice would have been Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail who is blonde and blue-eyed. Vail is a five-year veteran of the Kansas National Guard and is pursuing the double majors of Chemistry and Chinese at Kansas State University and was excluded according to Starnes simply because, “the liberal Miss America judges were not interested in a gun-toting, deer-hunting, military veteran.”
A small sampling of the tweets that erupted following her win shows exactly who it is that Starnes was catering to:
“If you’re #Miss America you should have to be American”
She is an American.
“WHEN WILL A WHITE WOMAN WIN #MISSAMERICA? Ever??!!”
There have, of course, been many, in fact the vast majority have been white.
“Well they just picked a Muslim for Miss America. That must’ve made Obama happy. Maybe he had a vote.”
She is not Muslim and the President of course had no vote.
“Miss America right now or miss Al Qaeda?”
Too stupid to deserve a response.
“9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America?
Again, too stupid for an answer.
It is these people who Starnes was appealing to, people who are ignorant of anything about Miss Davuluri except her physical appearance. People who also believe that all Muslims want to kill us “because they hate our freedom.”
Davuluri’s parents immigrated to Missouri in 1981 where her father was a Gynecologist. They later moved to Syracuse, NY where she was born in 1989 and lived until the family moved to Oklahoma when she was four and then later to Michigan where she attended college, moving back to Fayettville, a Syracuse suburb in the mid 2000s where her father is an Ob/Gyn affiliated with St. Joseph’s Hospital. Her goal is to become a Cardiologist eventually.
What was not needed in this instance is a “news” organization to be fueling the fires of intolerance and hatred that burn so brightly on the far right. Any responsible news commentator would have attempted to defuse these unreasonable and uninformed attacks by supplying the facts, instead Starnes in true Faux News form chose to fan the flames. Miss Vail is an excellent representative for her state and a beautiful woman, but the same can be said for Miss Davuluri, but the voting is over, she is, in fact, an American, not a Muslim (not that it should be even taken into consideration even if she was) and she is not an Arab (again irrelevant).
Mr. Starnes and all of these bile filled tweeters owe our new Miss America an apology but of course that will not be forthcoming since in their sublime ignorance they do not think that they have done anything wrong.
