The NYPD took a break from choking African-American men to death for allegedly selling loose cigarettes to brutally attack a pregnant woman who attempted to intervene in the arrest of her 17-year-old son. However, the child that was truly in danger from this encounter was not born yet.
Officers violently slammed 44-year-old Sandra Amezquita, who is five months pregnant, to the ground before one of the Boys in Blue climbed on top of the woman, pressing her stomach into the pavement. For good measure, officers fired a Taser into the 5’4” tall woman’s belly.
According to El Grito de Sunset Park, a police watchdog group, the officers were harassing Amezquita’s son over a prior robbery arrest. “It was disgusting what we saw,” said Dennis Flores, a member of the group. “You know, how can you treat a human being this way – you know, an innocent child in the belly?”
Officers, however, say they were attempting to arrest the teen for possession of a knife — a weapon the 17-year-old says officers planted on him.
“According to this young man, the cops, when they put the razor blade in his pocket, they told him, ‘We’re going to make sure this time, it sticks,’” Flores said. “So the mom saw this, started yelling out, and the cops grabbed her and slammed her against the floor like we see in the video. And they put a Taser to her stomach.”
Amezquita says that the Taser left a burn on her abdomen, and that she was still in pain from the attack days later. Fortunately, her child is still alive. However, according to Flores, the mother is having complications related to the attack. “Her belly is now with black and blue bruises,” he said. “She’s bleeding and she’s having complications.”
According to CBS New York, “Police said Lemos was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and harassment. Two other males were charged with assault, resisting arrest, obstructing government administration, and harassment, while a woman was given a disorderly conduct summons.”
In the video, police can be seen slamming another woman to the ground when she allegedly attempted to interfere with their attack on Amezquita.
Internal Affairs is investigating the incident, but Flores fears nothing will be done. “These cops need to be fired,” said Flores. “What we are seeing here is a group of officers that are acting more like criminals instead of people that are here to protect us and serve the interest of the people in this neighborhood.”
