Ashleigh Banfield, a CNN Host, decimated Texas councilwoman Heidi Thiess’ attempt to ban undocumented immigrant children from entering her city on Thursday.
Earlier this week, League City became the first Texas town to pass a resolution denying any requests to assist the federal government in the ongoing immigration crisis. It specifically ruled out detention centers for children within the city limits.
However, Thiess wasn’t ready to be publicly shamed on TV when she agreed to discuss the resolution on CNN Thursday, especially when Banfield began hammering her.
“Do you see how those who are your critics say that is just heartless? We’ve got kids being raped in overcrowded detention facilities. They need help. These are people who are desperate, and they need help. And, effectively, your critics say you’re just turning your backs on them,” Banfield said. Thiess rejected the hosts’ pointed criticism, responding, “the unaccompanied minors account for about 18 percent of the total numbers that are in detention right now. And so, you don’t get a choice as a locality as to who you will accept into your community.”
She didn’t get get finish; Banfield cut her off:
Councilwoman, there’s 50,000 of these kids expected this year. Whatever numbers you’re working off of are completely skewed by the craziness that’s going on right now! And I know you’ve seen it, and I know you’ve seen all those people who have come out to protest busses, where kids inside of busses have their faces pressed up to the glass, and they’re seeing Americans who look like the land of the rabid!
And what I’m asking you is, a policy like this kind of smacks of that. Do you not see the difference between illegal immigrants who are here — maybe — to get a free ride, and those who are desperately seeking protection from murderers?”
Of course she doesn’t. The only thing right-wingers are ever concerned with are people looking to get a free ride; there’s only so many spaces on the “free ride bus” and right-wingers are afraid that if they don’t zealously guard their spot, they’ll get booted off.
How else do you explain their unwillingness to help fellow human beings? And children at that; you’d think for someone as “pro-life” as Heidi Thiess is, she’d see value in protecting the lives of all children. Are you telling me she’s another “pro-lifer” that’s only pro-life when it comes to regulating uteri?
Or maybe it’s only White “babies” that she wants to protect.
Thiess attempted to argue that she had a “singular responsibility” to residents of her community, but as she started to explain that the solution was for “the federal government to start enforcing the laws,” Banfield cut her off again.
Ms. Theiss, please stop with this, you know full well that these people aren’t escaping into America! They’re volunteering at the border to be caught. No one is getting through the wall of those who are there. This is a different circumstance. It’s the desperate who are begging for help. It’s not those who are sneaking in. You understand the difference, right?
The children, right now, who are arriving at the border are volunteering, surrendering themselves to the border agents! The border agents are actually doing their jobs! It’s being enforced! The problem is there’s so many, it’s overcrowded. They’re being raped, they’re being beaten, and they need help! Some of them don’t even have water. And in at least one case, 100 of them are sharing one toilet that doesn’t even have a door.
And that’s why I’m asking you if you would really turn your backs if the federal government asked you to help?
Thiess, oblivious to the clue that Banfield branded into a baseball bat and cracked her upside the head with a few seconds previous, fired back by saying that “You’re talking about government funded stash house. We know exactly what happens inside stash houses. We are trying to stop it, and the only way to stop it is to stop the flow of traffic. And you don’t stop the flow of traffic by inviting more in, and taking them all in. You have to stop it!”
Banfield, meanwhile, told her that she “had to stop” sending her message and “that they can’t turn their backs on desperation.”
