It’s a miracle. A mainstream media outlet took, for a brief moment today, to pointing out one of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s latest outright lies.
CNN aired the following caption on Wednesday: “TRUMP: I NEVER SAID JAPAN SHOULD HAVE NUKES (HE DID).”
On Thursday, Democratic front runner Hillary Clinton delivered a speech touching on foreign policy issues — and blasting Donald Trump’s inexperience in that regard. Trump has in fact called for nuclear weapons to be held by Japan, and Clinton’s response to that flamboyant suggestion was to question if Trump “even knows that he’s talking about nuclear war.” Trump then denied ever having suggested such a scenario as the expansion of nuclear weapons.
Now the reason Trump cares about any of this controversy is because he is trying his hand at using his experience in business manipulation to win the White House in November as he and Clinton continue to go after each other from a general election perspective.
The media actually standing up to the many lies Trump has, well, trumpeted is rare. As Think Progress, which also dug up the tape of one of Trump’s other most obscene lies, his supposed opposition to the Iraq War, put it:
‘Covering Donald Trump can be difficult. He frequently says things that are not true and when he’s presented with the facts, ignores them. Meanwhile, much of the media is invested in a notion of objectivity that involves legitimizing both sides of every issue.’
The thing is, of course, that Trump’s mush of words on something as obscene as the expansion of the world’s nuclear arsenal is problematic, to say the least. The expansion of nuclear weapons held in reserve by world powers goes against the trend of the world for the past several decades. And the fact that Trump can’t even get his head straight on this issue? More than problematic. Much more than problematic. As leader after leader has said, Trump just shouldn’t have access to the nuclear go button for America’s arsenal.
Saying “I didn’t mean it” isn’t going to cut it if you just launched a nuclear warhead.
