Sean Hannity berated Ferguson Democratic committeewoman Patricia Bynes on the August 20 edition of his Fox News show, and Cenk Uygur is having none of it.
In a scathing commentary on The Young Turks, Uygur points out Hannity’s double standard on this issue, and offers him some advice: “Why don’t you shut the f*ck up, because you weren’t there.”
Hannity invited committeewoman Bynes to talk about the events surrounding the shooting of Michael Brown by officer Darren Wilson, and as soon as she said something he didn’t want to hear, he began to talk over her, telling her “let me educate you.”
Hannity insists that Bynes cannot know the what happened because she wasn’t there. Uygur points out the obvious: Hannity doesn’t know either, because Hannity wasn’t there. But throughout the interview with Bynes, Hannity presents claims such as the one made by the Ferguson police department that Wilson had an orbital eye socket fracture. No evidence of that has ever been presented: no photos, no records of hospital or medical treatment, yet Hannity accepts it as truth.
Hannity’s big argument is that because the facts haven’t been presented in court yet, nobody can really know what happened, including whether Wilson is guilty or innocent of using excessive force. But he misses that the unrest in Ferguson was caused in part by the fact that Wilson has not been arrested or charged, which would allow him to have his day in court. Instead, he plays the line that the real victim in this incident is Darren Wilson, not Michael Brown.
Uygur nails Hannity on his hypocrisy:
Let me educate you, Sean. Just because we’re not yet in a court of law…does not mean that facts don’t exist. Facts can exist outside of a courtroom.
You keep saying to her [Bynes] ‘you don’t know, because you weren’t there.’ But you also don’t know, because you weren’t there. But then you go on and tell your audience, ‘Oh the severe facial injuries and eyewitness reports…’ Wait a minute, I thought we weren’t in a court of law. There’s no facts, right? But whenever she talks about eyewitnesses — ‘Shut up! Shut up!! We haven’t gotten to court yet. You don’t understand the American justice system.’
Then what the hell are you talking about your eyewitnesses for? Why are you talking about the severe facial injuries we’ve never seen? It seems as if you’re kind of trusting the cop’s side of it. Now, I know you wouldn’t do that, Sean.
