Last week, conservative columnist Mary Katherine Ham appeared on Bill O’Reilly’s showto discuss the new law in Colorado which legalized the recreational use of marijuana. Of course, O’Reilly is appalled that such an evil could be unleashed on the nation. Ham, who usually agrees wholeheartedly with his every word, found herself at odds with him on this subject.
O’Reilly tried to introduce a non-starter into the debate by asking her if she wanted her daughter to be smoking pot as a teenager, but Ham was not about to let him get away with it.
She tried to point out that the law allows adults to purchase and smoke it, not teens, and that any problem with teens getting it was not related to the law. But in his usual fashion, O’Reilly just talked over her and grew more condescending as she continued to try to make her point.
Finally, O’Reilly basically told her to shut up and stay in her place. One could almost hear him say, ‘shut your mouth woman and know your place.’
This week, O’Reilly had her back on the show to continue the conversation.
“If you’re going to advocate for the legalization of marijuana, he said, “then you’re going to have to answer questions about children.”
Going on he said, “by the time your daughter gets to the teen age years, pot will be like chewing gum, smoking a cigarette.”
Ham tried once more to be reasonable with him saying, “I do not want my daughter, since we’re talking about her, to maybe drink a bunch of alcohol, or have a tattoo when she’s a teenager, those things are legal. They might be inadvisable for my child but I do not necessarily think that they have to be illegal. Especially if it takes billions of dollars to keep them illegal.”
Going on, she said, “Further, when it comes to alcohol and THC, I disagree with you fundamentally, I think people can enjoy marijuana and alcohol, in moderation, as adults…”
At this point Bill could no longer contain himself and interrupted this uppity woman asking, “Then why are we veering out of the children realm?”
As Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks says, it is fun to watch two conservatives trying to talk over one another and even though both of these two are 100% wrong most of the time, Ham is the clear winner on this subject.
