Bill Nye has decided to be the “Poverty, Health, and Foreign Aid Guy” as well!
In a video produced by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Nye explains that if we actually look at the data we can see how kids are dying and how to prevent it. Nye points out that we spend less than 1% of foreign aid despite a perceived 25% expenditure.
Nye hits us with some disturbing numbers that show we aren’t doing too much: we’re doing too little, both in and outside of the United States. It turns out, the majority of child deaths under age 5 are from preventable illnesses. According to Nye,
- 11% are from non-communicable diseases
- 6% are from injuries
- 83% die from communicable diseases
Nye also takes the claim that money we have been wasting money on Africa to task: As the Science Guy explains, in the past couple of decades child mortality has been cut in half.
“We have a real opportunity to leave the world better than we found it, to dispel these myths and move on to improve the quality of life of people everywhere,” Nye says.
