New poll figures show that fear of ISIS may be overriding American’s war fatigue; MSNBC quotes a report that shows nearly 61% of Americans support some sort of military action against the terrorist group, when not even two months ago, Americans were tired of war. Much of this can be attributed to media fear mongering and neocon warmongering, but the responsibility doesn’t end there; that’s just where it starts.
During his show, Real Time, Bill Maher dissected this drive to war, and the fear behind it. According to Maher, the danger ISIS represents is being blown out of proportion by neocon warhawks, but it’s also our faults as well, since “they’re selling terror and boy are we buying.”
“Lindsey Graham, the Senate’s own Blanche DuBois, is the scaredest person in the world,” Maher said, “He and John McCain are like the ghost and Mr. Chicken.”
After tearing into Graham, McCain, and other chickenhawks, Maher made a point about the disturbing videos of journalists being beheaded by ISIS and why the videos alone don’t justify the fear that most Americans feel. And while Maher said he admires the courage of the journalists, he noted that:
“When you choose to live among cut throats, you might get your throat cut. Do Americans living here really think they’re going to be next?”
Maher said that there are larger problems to deal with, such as climate change, but “try selling that to the United States of Pants Shitters.”
“You know, conservatives love to vilify anyone who doesn’t immediately wanna throw down as appeasers,” Maher said, “but when you’re dealing with terrorists whose aim is to bait us into overreaction and you oblige them, aren’t you the appeaser?”
