“Raising the minimum wage will destroy America!” This is the line from the Right which, at this point, one would have to be living under a rock — at the bottom of the ocean — to avoid hearing. With fast food and retail workers across the nation joining strike lines, demanding a wage they can afford to live on, Republicans in Congress are finding themselves tripping over their own rhetoric. As the rates of American wage slaves requiring public assistance simply to get by continue to rise, conservatives and corporate lobbyists are working overtime to reconcile their hatred for social services, with their apparent hatred for the lower working classes.
Thus comes the great senator from Vermont, Bernie Sanders, proposing to them what he dubs,
“…an offer they cannot refuse.”
Raise the minimum wage.
An easy sell to the GOP? Unlikely, as in Bernie’s own words…
“…they are living in a very different world. And their world really is to take us back to an oligarchic form of society, where working people have no form of protection…many of these guys actually want to abolish the concept of a minimum wage, having Americans work for three or four bucks an hour…”
But as bitter a pill as this may be for House and Senate Republicans to swallow, in the continued absence of a jobs bill and their ongoing objection to extending unemployment benefits to the estimated 1.3 million Americans who are still out of work, their options appear to be drying up by the hour.
Without even the means to argue that employers cannot afford to pay a high wage in light of often record-setting corporate profits, the factual realities which once conservative rhetoric managed to gloss over, are now becoming a glaring and obvious truths that even some of the most deluded corporate cheerleaders find impossible to argue in support of.
With these and the coming fight over the debt ceiling looming on the horizon, Senator Sanders is hopeful that his colleagues in the GOP will keep the disastrous and expensive results from their last government shutdown in mind. For should they fail to learn from the lessons of their own recent and self afflicted history, many are speculating that this may be the beginning of the end for the Grand Old Party as we’ve known it.
